There is plain rebar (class A1) for non-critical areas and ribbed rebar (classes A3, A500C, etc.) with enhanced bond, which is used in load-bearing structures.

A1 rebar is plain (has no ribs) and is mainly used as auxiliary reinforcement; A3 is ribbed (with projections), provides better bond with concrete and serves as the main load-bearing reinforcement.

Rebar diameter is chosen based on the design load: foundations usually use 12–16 mm bars, while light structures and floor slabs use 8–10 mm; the exact diameter is determined by the project design.
